City Hall Weil am Rhein

Neubau eines Rathauses — Rathausplatz 1, 79576 Weil am Rhein, Germany — 4.200 m² — 12.2016 — Stadt Weil am Rhein

Pas de deux

The dialogical constellation towards existing buildings and surrounding architecture played a major role in the concept of the town hall expansion in Weil am Rhein.
The four-storey corpus corresponds to the surrounding residential construction. Moreover, it guarantees a coherent, clear appearance of both town hall buildings.

A two-storey town hall tower constitutes a visual, architectural anchor while the building’s main section in the south communicates between old and new: by way of a connecting glass corridor, the structures are perceived as a unit and yet remain distinct. This effect is bolstered by the new façade of textile reinforced concrete, offering a modern interpretation of the old building’s marble slabs.
