Inner cities need architecture that takes responsibility early

Alexander Langendörfer (DIRINGER & SCHEIDEL) offered rare behind-the-scenes insights into New7. A tour through REWE, limehome, the Endokrima medical practice and the residential units made one thing clear: mixed use is no coincidence, but the result of planning that prioritizes everyday life, frequency and neighborhood from the outset. Architecture thus becomes the foundation of a resilient usage concept.
As one of the first projects of this scale, New7 demonstrates how the transformation of a former department store can succeed. Located in a prominent position within Mannheim’s Quadrate, a vibrant mixed-use destination has emerged.
The project also sets standards in construction: large parts of the existing structure were retained, complemented by timber hybrid extensions, green façades and the reuse of around 40% of the concrete. Awarded the Local Green Deal plaque, DGNB Gold certification is currently in preparation.
New7 exemplifies blocher partners’ long-standing commitment to Mannheim – with the ambition to shape architecture as a driver of urban transformation.
