Urban quarter Berlin Hellersdorf

Concept for a residential quarter — Berlin-Hellersdorf, Germany — Gesobau AG

Clear building form with a playful character

Originally realized as a large-scale prefabricated housing estate in what was then East Germany today Hellersdorf is one of the districts of Berlin characterized by constant change. The competition brief was to design a new residential quarter that meets the highest standards of sustainability and design while creating living space in particular for those in the low or average income brackets.

The new building offers total space of around 7,200 square meters on Martin Riesenburger Strasse and takes up the characteristic defining structure of the surrounding buildings from the 1970s while creating a highlight at the striking corner to the green corridor of the district. Free spaces and spacious courtyards make for ample light and high quality of living for the 113 residential units and lend a playful character to the clear design of the building.
